Ford Sierra RS Cosworth: The Legend of Sports Sedans
Share
The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth is one of the most famous icons of motorsports in the 1980s and 1990s. Created to gain Group A homologation for rallying and touring cars, this "muscle" saloon won over enthusiasts with its breathtaking performance and aggressive looks. Produced from 1986 to 1992, the Sierra Cosworth was born from an ambitious project by Ford's European racing division, in collaboration with Cosworth. The beating heart of the car was a four-cylinder turbo engine producing over 200 hp, capable of providing blistering acceleration and a heart-stopping driving experience.
First shown at the 1985 Geneva Motor Show, the Sierra RS Cosworth immediately won over the public with its bold design, characterised by an air intake between the headlights and an iconic rear wing. Performance was no exception: 204bhp was sent to the rear wheels, ensuring extraordinary speed and agility. In 1987, the RS500 version, of which just 500 were built for the UK market, increased power to 224bhp and introduced aerodynamic modifications to further improve performance.
The second-generation Sierra RS Cosworth, launched in 1988, was based on the four-door Sierra, with improved suspension for greater cornering grip. The real revolution came in 1990 with the 220bhp 4x4 version, which made the car even more competitive in rallying, bringing it closer to the successes of the legendary Lancia Delta HF Integrale.
