Fiat Uno Turbo: The 80s Icon That Revolutionized Compact Sports Cars

In the 1980s, the small bombs, now known as "hothatches," dominated the automotive market with their incredible combination of compactness and power. Among them, the Fiat Uno Turbo was one of the most iconic protagonists, becoming a symbol of high performance in the compact sports segment.

The Fiat Uno Turbo: An Icon of the 80s and 90s

Launched in 1985, the Fiat Uno Turbo immediately won the hearts of enthusiasts thanks to its surprising performance. Equipped with a 1301 cc engine supercharged by an IHI VL-2 turbocharger, the Uno Turbo delivered 105 HP, transforming the Turin city car into a real beast capable of burning traffic lights. Weighing just 845 kg, this small car could reach a top speed of 200 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.3 seconds.

Performance and Advanced Technology

The Uno Turbo wasn’t just raw power; its engine featured a number of advanced technologies for its time, such as the Marelli Microplex digital electronic ignition, designed to prevent detonation by retarding ignition when necessary. The gearbox was derived from the Fiat group’s twin-cam engines, while self-ventilating disc brakes ensured effective braking.

A Discreet Yet Effective Design

Aesthetically, the Uno Turbo stood out for some specific details, such as the spoiler integrated into the tailgate and the air intake for the oil radiator and intercooler. The interior was sporty and well finished, with seats that offered excellent support when cornering and a complete dashboard instrumentation, also available in digital version.

The Evolution: One Turbo Second Series

In 1989, Fiat introduced the second series of the Uno Turbo, which retained all the fast, agile and easy-to-handle sports qualities of the first version, with an updated 1372 cc engine, equipped with a Garrett turbine. Power increased to 116 HP, slightly reduced to 111 HP in the catalytic converter version. The Uno Turbo continued to be produced until 1995, when it was replaced by the Punto GT.
