Clio Williams 2.0 16V: A Timeless Icon
Share
The Clio Williams 2.0 16V is not just a car, but an icon that has marked the history of motorsport and Renault. Born in 1993 to celebrate the sporting soul of the French brand, this car was supposed to be a limited edition, with only 3,800 units planned. However, its success was such that Renault was forced to produce over 12,000 units, conquering enthusiasts around the world.
At the time, Renault was supplying engines to the Williams Formula 1 team, and the Clio Williams was a tribute to this partnership. Designed to compete in Group A and N rallies, the car was based on the Clio 16V, but with an uprated 2.0-litre engine producing 147bhp and 175Nm of torque. This allowed the Clio Williams to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 7.7 seconds, with a top speed of almost 215km/h. The engine, codenamed F7R, was an evolution of the 1.8 16V, but with a number of modifications that improved performance and sound.
Aesthetically, the Clio Williams stood out for its aggressive look, with flared fenders, a small hump on the bonnet with a Naca air intake, and the characteristic metallic blue paintwork with gold Speedline wheels. Inside, the sporty cockpit was embellished with bucket seats upholstered in grey velvet with the Williams badge, and a plaque indicating the limited edition.
The Clio Williams was produced in three series, with the final version (Clio Williams 3, 1995-96) boasting 150bhp and new features such as a brighter blue exterior and the option of ABS. However, the disappearance of the numbered plaque in the cabin is considered a defect by collectors, lowering its value.
